Some energetic problems during human growth

Abstract
The energetics of growth are best correlated with the development of the cell mass. The relationship between transformation of total energy and cell mass during the embryonal and infantile period is constant and corresponds to the value of hard-working people. The high rate of infant metabolism appears to be unaffected since the caloric turnover remains equally distributed throughout the day. This fixed energy distribution is typical for the infant, whereas the adult is capable of a remarkable additional turnover of energy. This situation loosens up with the development of static function whereas the period of relatively intensive cell mass build-up stops simultaneously.
Zusammenfassung
1. Entscheidend für eine Betrachtung der Energetik ist die Wahl einer zweckmäßigen somatischen Bezugsgröße. Die Zellmasse scheint besonders geeignet. Ihre Berechnung aus dem Körpergewicht auf der Basis von Thiosulfat-Raumbestimmungen an Frühgeborenen, Säuglingen und Kindern wird hergeleitet.
2. Der globale Stoffwechsel wird am besten durch den Gesamtenergieumsatz repräsentiert, und Berechnungen ergeben, daß der Säugling etwa 100 Kal. pro kg ZM und Tag umsetzt, was der Leistung eines Schwerarbeiters entspricht.
3. Die im Verlaufe des Wachstums sich entwickelnde körperliche Leistungsfähigkeit entsteht offenbar durch die Verschiebung des Oberflächen-Volumen-Verhältnisses zugunsten der letzteren Größe.
