Abstract
The thread-like pseudopodia (“reticulopodia”) of the monothalamous foraminiferAllogromia laticollaris are not compact cytoplasmatic strands. They consist to a large extent of a cytoplasmatic network representing numerous branchings and anastomosing sub-strands of sub-light microscopical size. These sub-strands are, to a large degree, polarly directed, but generally not arranged in parallel bundles; they diverge and converge in constant change. They often seem to resemble not so much an even thread, but rather the spawn-cord of a frog. In addition to these “composite” reticulopodia, there are also “uniform” ones consisting of a single cytoplasmatic strand, which is uninterruptedly surrounded by the cell-membrane. Yet, the latter often show numerous small, irregular vacuolar structures (“lacunes”) within the strand. Thus, a splintering of the cytoplasm into smaller areas is attained within these “uniform” reticulopodia by “lacunization”, similar to the “composite” reticulopodia which are split into separate sub-strands. According to these morphological findings it is therefore not impossible to interpret the two-directional cytoplasmatic streaming in the lacunized “uniform” reticulopodia as well as in the “composite” ones on the basis of a “one-way street” concept. Uniting numerous sub-strands of a “composite” reticulopodium to a “uniform” one, flowing together of experimentally isolated pseudopodia into “drops”, or withdrawal of reticulopodia into the shell generally do not lead to compact cytoplasmatic masses; the reticulopodia-material is rather stored in “lacunized” form; thereby, a great cell-membrane storage is accomplished as well.
Zusammenfassung
