Abstract
Qualitative and quantitative analyses of phytoplankton from the inner part of Thermaikos Gulf were carried out in the period May 1988–April 1989. A total of 154 taxa were identified in the phytoplankton. the monthly values of the phytoplankton biomass ranged between 614 and 6700 mg/m3 (wet weight). The seasonal development of the phytoplankton biomass exhibited three peaks. Diatoms, dinoflagellates and cryptophytes were the most important constituents of the gulf phytoplankton. Throughout the year, five different phytoplankton assemblages were distinguished.
